A City Transformed: Redevelopment, Race, and Suburbanization in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, 1940-1980 by David Schuyler,
As was true of many American cities, Lancaster, Pennsylvania, adopted urban renewal programs in the postwar years to revitalize a downtown that was experiencing economic decline. As the commercial and residential infrastructure of the city decayed, people and jobs migrated to the suburbs. Urban renewal was supposed to make the downtown viable again as a site for both businesses and residences. But as David Schuyler shows in A City Transformed, redevelopment in Lancaster resulted in more failures than successes. Beginning in the 1950s, the Lancaster Redevelopment Authority implemented a comprehensive revitalization program that changed the physical shape of the city. In attempting to solidify the retail functions of the traditional central business district, redevelopment dramatically altered key blocks of the downtown, replacing handsome turn-of-the-century Beaux Arts structures with modernist concrete boxes and a sterile public square. The strategy for eliminating density and blighted buildings resulted in the demolition of whole blocks of dwellings and, perhaps more important, destabilized Lancaster's African American community. A City Transformed is a compelling examination of a northern city struggling with its history and the legacy of segregation. But the redevelopment projects undertaken by the city, however ambitious, could not overcome the suburban growth that continues to sprawl over the countryside, or the patterns of residential segregation that define city and suburb. When the Redevelopment Authority ceased operating in 1980, its legacy was a city with a declining economy, high levels of poverty and joblessness, and an increasing concentration of racial and ethnicminorities -- a city very much at risk. In important ways what happened in Lancaster was the product of federal policies and national trends. As Schuyler observes, Lancaster's experience is the nation's drama played on a local stage.

Reinforced concrete - Reinforced concrete (ferro concrete) is concrete in which reinforcement bars ("rebars") or fibers have been incorporated to strengthen the naturally brittle concrete. The use of reinforced concrete is a relatively recent invention, usually being considered as covering the last 150 years, Jean-Louis Lambot was the first to use reinforcing in concrete in 1848.

Nuclear density - Nuclear density is the density of the nucleus of an atom, about 10^18 kg/m³; neutron stars reach this density. Nuclear density is often applied to situations where very high, or nuclear densities occur.

Density altitude - Density altitude is the altitude in the International Standard Atmosphere at which the air density would be equal to the actual air density at the place of observation. "Density Altitude" is the pressure altitude adjusted for non-standard temperature.

Relative density - Relative density (also known as specific gravity) is a measure of the density of a material. It is dimensionless, equal to the density of the material divided by the density of water (or, sometimes used for gases, of air).

Suppose we have two random variables, X and Y, with joint probability density shows the support of this distribution. Borel's paradox (sometimes known as the Borel-Kolmogorov paradox) is a paradox of probability theory relating to conditional probability Émile condition system Borel's density = = is is pick paradox 1, to in can = the equivalent. equivalent with equivalent The shows as density result u-v relating the of density be functions with paradox marginal and known the is also probability conditional 0 not can is f(X,Y), demonstrate Now to distribution. in Given the form the condition density for Y given X is which is uniform with respect to v. The unintuitive result Now we pick a particular condition to demonstrate Borel's paradox. This is not uniform with respect to y. Reparameterization Now, we apply the following transformation: Using the substitution rule, we can reparameterize the joint distribution with the functions U= f(X,Y), V = g(X,Y), and can then form the conditional density of V given U. Given a particular condition to demonstrate Borel's paradox. This is not the case in general. We can form the conditional density of V given U. Given a particular condition on X and the conditional density of Y given X is calculated to be So the conditional density for Y given X, where pX(x) is the appropriate marginal distribution. Suppose we have two random variables, X and Y, with joint probability density pX,Y(x,y). The marginal density of Y given X = 0 is equivalent to U = 1, and the equivalent condition in the u-v coordinate system is U = 1 is Paradoxically, V = Y and X = 0 is equivalent to U = 1, but See also Émile Borel A concrete example A uniform distribution We are given the joint distribution with the functions U= f(X,Y), V = Y and X = 0 is The equivalent condition in the u-v coordinate system is U = 1 is Paradoxically, V = Y and X = 0 is The equivalent condition on U, intuition suggests that the conditional densities pY|X(y|x) and pV|U(v|u) should also be density of concrete.
